Preparing For The EventHOW TO PREPARE FOR “PARTY LIKE IT’S TOMORROW!”What it’s not. When was the last time you really got lathered up over a networking event? Did you truly look forward to your last Rotary, Chamber or Association luncheon? Were you conversing with high energy, positive minded, “carpe diem” types or did your networking feel more like the polite exchange you might have while paying your respects to the family of a deceased colleague? What it is: A gift to yourself.Party Like It’s Tomorrow is not an average networking event! Party Like It’s Tomorrow is an utterly new, powerfully bold, joyously innovative approach to meeting like-minded professionals. This is not about selling widgets, peddling consulting services, marketing insurance policies or promoting vacations to Bora-Bora. This is about selling yourself on the idea that you CAN DO anything you truly set your mind to doing. While you are test driving your new persona, you will be electrified and inspired by a ballroom filled with other people doing the same thing. The most important thing about this networking party is not the glorious menu or the stunning location, (though, we guarantee, both will delight you) the most important component of this event is your ability to visualize your potential in a concrete and empowering way.Tip #1: Dream big. What is your loftiest ambition? What is your secret desire? What would you do if you thought you could not fail? Bring that sensibility to the party. Think long and hard about where you want to be five years from now—are you hoping to be a Maestro for the Philharmonic, a corporate CEO, the proprietor of a sleepy little B&B on a picturesque cove in New England? Write it down in detail. The more detail you have in it (Are you driving a BMW?) and the act of writing it down dramatically increases the likelihood of it happening. Resolve that it will happen in the company of other ambitious dreamers.Tip #2: Prepare mentally.Take an honest inventory of your strong abilities and talents. Honestly reflect on what new skills you may need to enhance your chances of obtaining your dream. Decide you will create target dates on your calendar when you will implement new skills, enroll for new classes or telephone mentors, heroes or role models that matter to you.Tip #3: Dress for your success!A famous acting instructor once coached her students that, “…our wardrobes are only costumes—we need only to determine whom we are going to dress to be.” Edith Head, the famous Hollywood fashion designer, once quipped—“you can be anything you determine to be, if only you will dress for it.” Heed the advice of these two wise women. How would you dress if you were the next Pavarotti? What would you wear if you retired to Hawaii and filled your days with golfing and recreation? What will you look like when you sign your first meaningful contract or create the sculpture that wins you recognition from the National Council for the Arts? Dress for your success. If you think that bringing a prop along with you will make the experience more palpable, bring it along. This is not a costume party, but it is a safe and nurturing environment to dream big dreams. (However, if your big dream is to model for Victoria’s Secret, you may want to reconsider engaging too forcefully in your wardrobe fantasy—let’s keep this G-rated please). Tip #4: Bring a business card.We also invite you to bring along your business cards. You may either bring the cards you presently own or you may wish to visit your local Staples or www.IPrint.com and order the business cards you imagine you will be distributing 60 short months from now. In either case, make sure people will have a tangible way of remembering who you are and where you are going to be within 5 years.Question about protocol or ethics for the evening?
